We've been out of commission, but we've been painting! I painted an entire Trollbloods army this year. Have Dark Elves and Chaos Marines on my table... and more Trollbloods!

A TON has happened. Real life drama, work, life changing stuff. But we've painted.

We have also all been away from GW as a whole for over a year but that's changing. Regardless, stay tuned, who know's what's next!Wallshammerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14543135205443601567noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536539613012956241.post-69022904611645222882013-01-01T21:59:00.000-08:002013-01-01T21:59:35.877-08:00The Big News for 2013......is really big! I (Wallshammer) am opening my own gaming and hobby store!

It's going to be a huge venture and adventure for myself as I try my hand at running what's a gaming store. Really, it's the dream of every hobbyist after all. It will be/is located in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. We are on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/groups/384923688266796/ and http://www.facebook.com/KapowComicsCardsAndGamesLtd and also on twitter @kapowltd

We'll be selling miniature games, board games, CCG's, merchandise, "toys", collectibles and all the sort of stuff you'd expect in a store this style. Plus we'll have all sorts of in store events and special happenings as well as a regular weekly schedule of going ons.

Please, join up ESPECIALLY if you are local. I will be running all sorts of deals through the sites for viewers and visitors. We will also have an online store presence, details on that to come as I sort it out with my vendors.

As for the blog... we'll see what happens. I am going to have very little time to devote to it and am not sure any of the other authors are doing anything here anymore. If this is the end, thanks for your viewership, it's been great to see.

In the meantime... KAPOW!Wallshammerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14543135205443601567noreply@blogger.com24tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536539613012956241.post-65104793390003614092012-12-20T12:32:00.001-08:002012-12-20T12:32:43.911-08:00Smackdown in Santa Town mini battle report!Smackdown in Santa Town has come and went in a blaze of Imperial Glory as the combined forces of Imperial Guard, Space Wolves and Grey Knights were able to outlast and destroy the ork horde. Of course, when one GK unit is 1500 points...

We took video of the event and hope to have that up soon!

Come inside and see some pictures!

First up, a completely full ork deployment zone. We pretty much had NO room for anything else. A combined near 400 models will do that.
Fear's army is a beauty. He needs to completely finish it before he sells it. Sells it you ask? Why yes! Interested? Let us know! He's discovered it's not really the casual play army he'd like. If you'd like it, make an offer! Still, wonderful looking stuff.

Richard's old guard are so, so awesome. Just a mix of weird models from way back in the day. I need to get a close up of some of them sometime. He used this massive unit as conscripts and they actually did a TON of damage.

And we get moving! Koptas went way up there and pretty much the whole line pushed forwards recklessly. 7k a side on a Wednesday night is not a game for dynamic strategy. We just charged!

A good shot of Doompickle's crazy battlewagon. I really dig the line of Space Wolves. Very poetic.

We continue to advance. Theme of the night was guard staying back, Space Wolves charging up the flanks. And it obviously worked. Those Thunderwolves accounted for 3 30 man units and barely took any damage.

Like I said, it was a cracking time and I hope to get videos up here soon, once I figure out how to combine them into one. They're a bit more descriptive. Also, you can tell how tired we are getting by the end.

This game was probably the last gaming day of the year for most guys. I have a tourney coming up on the 29th. Hopefully I can get some more pictures and vids from that for the blog!

Also should have some pretty huge news coming in the New Year.

Well... sort of.

I was organizing my list for Armageddon 4: Smackdown in Santa Town on Wednesday and figured I might as well put all my orks out so I can pack them by unit. So... I did! Here, in all it's glory...

WAAAAGH DAKKASTAB!

It's coming... WEDNESDAY!

So, for those wondering what the hell I am talking about and who actually clicked to come in and read this post, let me tell you.

It's actually nothing earth shattering. And there goes all our readers.

Four of us (so far) are getting together for a big game on Wednesday night, Orks vs Imperium. It'll be myself and Doompickle playing the greenskins vs HAAC's Fear and another fellow playing the Imperium: Marines, Guard and Inquisition. It's going to be an awesome throwdown. Totally light hearted fun. We're bringing egg nog, wearing santa hats, eating Christmas Tree cookies and candy cane donuts and just having fun. We're aiming at around 6k a side. Could be more or less depending on what happens. It's fully painted only, so look for pictures and maybe even a battle report if we can muster it. I don't believe in doing big games like this or battle reports with grey, unpainted plastic.

So far, here's what I am bringing

3 Warbosses! 1 normal, 1 in mega armour, 1 on a bike.
Big Mek
Nob Bikers
Battlewagon full of Nobz
A Battlewagon with a kilkannon
Looted Wagon with Boom gun
Grot Tanks
Some Deff Koptas
Several mobs of boyz
At least one trukk Boyz squad.
Trukk full of burnas
Lootas
Snikrot and his kommandoes
Blitzabomma
Warbuggy or 2
Kanz

I have, currently, about 3500pts of fully painted Orks. I think Doompickle has a couple thousand/2500, somewhere in that range, so there's our 6k! Unbelievably so, my 3500pts is actually legal and even includes an orky defence line.

It's gonna be fun!

Wallshammerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14543135205443601567noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536539613012956241.post-37291584599102440492012-12-12T22:54:00.001-08:002012-12-12T22:54:19.102-08:00New 1500pt Ork ListIs this the one? Is this the list I'll take to the tournament I've been discussing and practicing for on the 29th? I'm not sure!

It's sort of similar to my last wacky list, but geared more towards a tournament setting. Well... sort of. There's no AV 14, no hordes of boys. But LOTS of firepower as I witnessed tonight in a practice game, this time against foot slogging Nurgle/Noise Marines... or, as Fear called it, the Two Face Army.

Actually, he should do an article on it. I think it's an army with some legs.

Anyhow, the sheer amount of Str 5 and 6 was staggering, not to mention several high strength, low AP large blasts I can do. What's in the list? Click, enter, and see.

Big Mek: KFF in a Mek Junka w/ Shokk Attack Gun (from IA8)
--My Warlord and as basic as it gets for equipment. His Junka is where it's at. Though completely random, it can be utterly, insanely dangerous.

2 Units of Slugga Trukk Boyz w/ Nobs (Power Klaw and Bosspole)
2 Units of Shoota Trukk Boyz w/ 1 Big Shoota each and Nob w/ Bosspole and Big Choppa
--My "core" so to speak. They're driving around, presenting targets, blocking firing lanes, taking objectives and double teaming anything that comes near.

12 Grots and Runtherder
--Place an Objective somewhere hidden in my deployment zone, hide my grots on it and ignore them the rest of the game, just like my opponents tend to. So, all in all, 5 scoring units here in an objective game, not bad.

6 Lootas
--Small Unit of lootas that go in...

Mek Junka: 5 Big Shootas in total, 2 Grot Bombs (from IA8 as well)
--3 Big Shootas as is normal, 2 "grot sponsons" for the other 2 and 2 single use Large Blast Str 8 AP3 Ordnance Barrage. VERY powerful with a ton of firepower.

Grot Tank Battle Mob-3 tanks w/ grotzookas
--Fairly Inexpensive with a lot of really high strength shooting for a lil thing.

Warbuggy w/ TL Rokkits
Warbuggy w/ TL Rokkits
--Really, really cheap chaff. Zoom around, make sure whole units have to shoot at them and if I can, make sure they are shooting side and rear armor or even fliers

3 Killa Kanz: 2xTL Grotzookas, 1xTL Rokkits
--A ton of firepower, an awesome counter assault unit and AV 11 to boot so you have to actually put some real firepower against them. With a KFF pretty much always nearby, they've been more survivable then the internet says they should be. Maybe walkers aren't dead!

Dakkajet: 3 Supashootas
--I went without Fighta Ace. I figure everything else in my list can take out most skimmers or jetbikes anyhow. Fly around, shoot other fliers and take down some units in the open, especially with waaagh.

So there you have it, a modified version of what I tried. There is a TON in this list. However, it's really easy to set up and move around so should help in a tourney. Good thing, is if I am up and just need to keep objectives, I can throw so much stuff in the way that I don't mind sacrificing. It's worked in the games I've played so far! Wallshammerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14543135205443601567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536539613012956241.post-67418052116432000132012-12-11T12:17:00.000-08:002012-12-11T12:17:11.694-08:00The Strangest Ork List of them all?

It just might be! I've devised a bit of a weird mekked out Speed Freekz list. I have a feeling it might not work AT ALL but still... how much fun would it be? Come inside and lemme know!

So the list uses units from the Ork Codex and Imperial Armour 8: Raid on Kastorel-Novem. I had thought of just doing the Mek List in there as allies (they are Battle Brothers to Codex Orks after all) but nah! The tourney I am taking this to allows Forgeworld, so why not!

In my original list I have grots, kanz and lootas, none of which necessarily fit in with a real fluffy Speed Freeks army. Of course, it IS a tournament so exceptions can and probably should be made. Still, it's my first time at this place and it's on vacation, so fun is imperative. I am not saying this is the list I am taking, but it's wacky enough it might be a ton of fun.

Big Mek: KFF, Burna, Cybork Body in a Mek Junka w/ 3 Big Shootas, Deffrolla and a turret mounted SHOKK ATTACK GUN
--Yeah, you read that right, SAG baby! How zany would that be? Plus if you teleport the trukk into combat it counts as tank shocking... and has a deffrolla. Amazing. It's really fragile though, relatively, with AV 11, Open Topped and 3 HP. At least it always gets 5+ cover.

Grot Battle Tank Mob: 3 tanks, all with grotzookas. I
--I've expounded on the awesomeness that are Grot Tanks in other posts. Short range, unreliable and... AWESOME. I will make beep beep and zoom zoom noises all day with these.

20 Shoota Boyz w/ 2 big shootas in a battlewagon (deffrolla, 2 big shootas)
--An actual reliable unit in this army! Imagine that. They lay down a huge amount of firepower and AV14 with 4 HP and often cover is really hard to dislodge. If I feel the wagon is in trouble of getting blown up, I just disembark and sit on an objective

4xTrukk Boyz Squads: 11+Nob w/ Klaw and Bosspole
--4 super fast objective holders. They can even jump on a squad of marines, usually double teaming, and beat the piss out of them. I can even sacrifice one against something like Flamers or a squad with lots of templates so the other can assault freely. Never, ever underestimate a trukk squad.

Warbuggies x 2: Twin Linked Rokkits, Red Paint Jobs
--These will be a squadron this time. They zoom around and shoot vehicles or even fliers. They are super cheap and almost throw away. I've toyed with dividing the paint job points onto red paint for the two deffrollas. That'd be a last minute decision

Dakkajet: 3 Supa Shootas, Fighta Ace
--TL against everything. And a flier. I just assume everyone is going to have defence lines, but hopefully the sheer amount of big shootas in my army can take it out first turn.

Deffkopta: TL Rokkits
--Some would say and easy first blood but I always outflank with these to get sides of vehicles

So there we go, my super fast army of doom. It's a bit wacky with units no one really ever uses in ork armies. Whatcha think? Crazy enough to work?

I am working on a small Dark Elf force but since they aren't completed I have no pictures of them. I have also done a bit of terrain, most of which I hope to use for a future store I am (hopefully) opening.

More on that another time.

You saw the Arcane Fulcrum in a previous post. I have also painted up the MASSIVE Skullvane Manse.

This was quite a bit of a project. There were large swathes of the main colors you see: grey, blue, bronze.

I started with the bronze using tin bitz as the first layer. Over the stone I did a cinnamon brown from Michaels to base coat. From there I added in some blue/green in the recesses of all the tinbitz to get some oxidization going. I went over all the cinnamon on the stone with a heavy grey drybrush. I think the brown undercoat gives it a more natural look. On something this ancient, surely dirt would have accumulated, not just more grey or black.

I worked up the tin bitz with coppers and golds and added some silver in at the end for the final sheen. After all that was done I washed it all in devlan mud.

I did the blues fairly simply, just going lighter in both color and amount in each successive step, ending with space wolf grey.

The wood was dark brown, drybrushed over with bestial brown and snakebite leather for the final look. Then I went and did a very simple metal on everything that needed it: nails, hooks, windows, etc. Skulls were all painted in white... kablammo, the finished project.

I've also been working on some grot tanks for a tournament upcoming. I've had these babies for a bit, finally put three of the four I have together and got to work.

There's all three in their glory. I made sure they looked like pieces of junk metal painted over by grots and left to rust and decay like they surely would.

I went for the same red and yellow pattern I do on all my vehicles. I wanted them ramshackle, which they are, but also wanted somewhat of a cohesive color scheme to match the rest of my army. Grots copy everything, so it makes sense to me.

I really emphasized how dirty they were. No clean painted, lots of chipping and aging. I even used some old flesh wash ink to give it the rusty look. I had toyed with some tamiya rust, but I think it dried out too much and doesn't work worth a damn anymore, so no go.

Come inside for more details

So as for model progress I have chipped away a bit more at my other 2 chariots, got the blue and pinks done and most of the metal on one chariot. I would have had more done but I spent most of last night and the night before assembling the rest of the models in the battalion to play a 500 pt game last night.

The Game : So it was a 500 pt small game ( We have been doing 500 pt games lately getting everyone back into fantasy and giving everyone a good time to start a new army and slowly paint it up).

I played Lizardmen, I had a pre made list of 10 Archers with a lvl 2 liche priest, 3 chariots, 15 warriors and 5 bow horses. He didnt have a list premade so he made one up out of what he brought with him. His list was 10 Saurus w/ Hand weapon and shield, 15 skink with javelin and shield, a lvl 1 priest w/ the item that allows a second spell and... a stegadon. Sooo he did ask my permission to play the steg in our game and I allowed it.

The game started and first turn he just moved up, and I unloaded all of my shooting into the stegadon which I managed to do 2 wounds to it. Pretty impressive considering I didnt even roll Smiting for one of my spells, in which btw I rolled the killing blow spell and -1 tough and -1 str. (Sorry dont have the spell names memorised yet) anyways turn 2 his stegadon charged my 15 warriors and completely smashed them in one go, I might have killed 1 or 2 skink crew but nowhere enough to hold. His saurus failed a charge against my chariots leaving them close enough. And his skinks just advanced. On my side I shot the skinks with bows killing 3 and my chariot charged the saurus and my horsemen charged them in the rear. In that combat I killed 6 through wounds, he turned around ignored my chariots and killed all the horsemen but one. Needless to say he lost by 3 needed a 5 on cold blooded, failed, my chariots reformed and my single skeleton horse bowmen chased the rest of them down.

Next turn his skinks charged my archers with liche priest, he killed my liche priest (Sadly enough) and killed enough archers to crumble my unit. Once that happened the game was pretty much over for me, his stegadon charged my chariots, obliterated them and that was game.

In all I think it was a good first game at 500 pts, I think things may have gone a bit differently if I didnt have a stegadon to worry about at 500 pts.

Anyways just a quick update but Ill post some pics of progress and stay tuned for everything else!
And I got really bummed out when my painting table exploded. (I can't remember if I posted about that, but the table I use for painting, a modified laptop cart, blew a gasket on me, while painting some zombies. Not the worst thing in the world. No the worst thing was that I had a bunch of Eldar, Space Marines and Vampire Counts on the table at the time AND an open pot of flesh wash. So you can see why I was a little bummed out)

But I'm putting that behind me! I'm getting back on the horse. I'm other metaphor-ing! Seriously though, I'm going to work some Fantasy, since that's everyone's focus right now, and really, I ought to have a finished Fantasy army.

More after the break:

So, a little backstory: A few months ago, I traded my Dwarfs to Fear for his Vampire Counts. I had also gotten some Vampire Counts from a good friend of mine out on the coast, and was all prepped to jump inot the world of the undead. I thought it would be perfect: an army I could play on the table, and a ton of undead models I could use at the my other table, the D&D table.

Only it turns out I don't like Vampires. Who knew? Too dependent on the magic phase (my LEAST favorite phase of the game), too tactically inflexible (can't flee; no shooting phase), not to mention the 'fear factor' (I had what was being called an 'unkillable' zombie unit, 20 at 500, obviously raised past that, that was destroyed in a round by less than 10 Saurus... they only LOOK scary, the have no teeth. Get it? No teeth? Vampire Cou... nevermind.)

So I traded off all the Vampires to another local guy for EVEN MORE Orcs and Goblins! Oh, backstory on that. I traded away my Orcs and Goblins to the same guy on the coast I got the Vampires from, then later regretted getting rid of them and bought them back. I then later traded off my Tyranids (my actual ones and the ones I'd gotten from Fear, who are now in the possession of the Choas Kid... we're one big happy, inter-trading family out here) for a bunch of Orcs that Wallshammer had gotten in the trade. And did I mention I got a TON of Orcs (expanding my original 2500 point-ish arm) from another trade out on the coast (through Bartertown I think) that gave me a very impressive amount of Orcs? Bottom line here, I might have closing in on 20,000 points of Orcs. AND I think I've figured out a fast way to paint them, that while not being quite the calibre of painting I strive for, will still make them table-ready, which is really the key thing.

That being said, they are nowhere near ready to be painted. Like, at all. At the very least, the models that are assembled need mold-lines cleaned. So they are getting back-burnered for a bit.

Which brings me back to the Dwarfs. So I had sellers-regret on them as well. I'd gotten over a thousand points of them fully, and I think, quite nicely painted. So trading them off had just put me even farther behind getting a painted army finished. So, making a long story short, the DAY after I traded the Vampires, Fear was talking to Wallshammer, and said he was thinking about asking if we could trade back... d'oh! Well, getting the Vampires back is out of my hands now, but I did offer Fear a secondary trade: all my Trollbloods (which was quite a bit of stuff, books, counters, the whole she-bang), my entire Space Marine army, and my entire Dark Vengeance set. He liked the deal: who wouldn't? But hey, I got my Dwarfs back, and I cleared off my table a bunch of back-of-the-mind, niggling projects I probably wouldn't have gotten around to forever, but would have bugged me nonetheless.

The Space Marines were a solid army, but I already have the Wolves, and I'm not a multiple power armor kind of guy. I don't play a ton of Warmachine anymore, but I have a very large Circle army, and decent sized Cygnar army, AND this gives Fear the chance to get in the game, which I think he'll like. Finally, I don't even really know why I bought the Dark Vengeance set. I didn't want to start another 40k army, and yet there I was with more than 500 points of TWO different armies. I'm not doing Dark Angels, too many people out here already do, and I've never been a fan of Chaos. But the models were SOOOO shiny. It was a moment of weakness... and I got the small rulebook out of it.

Right, Dwarfs. I'm getting really off-track here. So I've got the Dwarfs back. Yay! They are boring as hell to play, but I like the models, and they do eliminate the one phase of the game I just, really, really, don't like: the magic phase. So I'm going got give them another shot. Try to figure out how to make them more fun, for both me and my opponent. And, like I said, I like painting them. There's something almost space marine-y about them. They are regimented, uniform, yet each model still has a nice diversity to them. I know their current plastic core kits have seen a bit of bashing the the ol' intertubez, but I like them. And I LOVE their warmachines Solid, very Dwarfy.

So I got a bunch of work done on them. I didn't go out gaming, (having a neck and/or medication issue... long story. Wait, this is already a long story. Forget about it.) and my wife actually convinced me to give painting a shot, since damn-near everything else I was doing was bugging my neck. And I'd done some prep work earlier that day, between me not sleeping. The pictures are posted all throughout this post, so I'll sum them up here:

Sanded the bases off all the models that didn't have sand on the bases

Primed all the models that needed priming

Excepting those models, got metals based on all models, except the 2 bolt throwers

Washed the metals on everything

Put a layer of red on 10 Thunderers, 20 Slayers, and all the remaining Warmachine crew (except one, which is still with Fear. I'll get him caught up when I get him back) and a couple of stray models (the BfSP Dwarf Thane, for example)

I'm heading out right now to see my folks, but I'll be back tonight and plan to get more done then. The plan is:

Touch-ups on all the washed metal

Putting metals down on the newly-primed models

I want to bring the rest of the army up to a certain level. Not really my style, since I tend to like to work small, but I figure this way I'll get a lot of the 'not fun' work out of the way (I don't like doing base metals. Don't know why.) Once the base work is done, they'll be up to around the level all my great axe Dwarfs are at, then I'll just finish them off in small chunks until they are done.

Also somewhere in here I'll do some work on my Elves too. I'm almost finished 2000 points with them, so when I get tired of the Dwarfs I'll switch over for a bit.

AAAAAAAAAAND I just realized I'm a dumb ass. I'm typing this out on my new computer (happy birthday to me!), but I don't have access to my phone on this computer, so I can't upload pictures. I'll have to put them in another post tomorrow or something. Right now though, I have to get going. It's an hour and a half drive to my parent's place.

Sorry.

The orks are coming back! This time it's for a tournament in Kalispell, Montana on December 29th. Being that I am a way outsider and it's during a vacation, I figured I'd take something a bit off the wall and unexpected. Who knows, maybe it will even do well? You tell me!

List first!

18 Boyz+PK Nob in a battlewagon w/ deffrolla and 2 big shootas
Trukk Boyz x2
15 grots
12 grots
9 Lootas
3 Kanz: 2 grotzookas, 1 rokkit
3 grot tanks!: all grotzookas

So, yeah, way off the wall. Basically a TON of threats zooming all over the field. Grots are generally ignored and in the day and age of multiple objectives, great lil units! Hide or stay in reserve and get objectives late. I have lots of luck with trukkboyz despite what the rest of the internet says. I do have an idea to put in a Mega Grot Tank instead of the kanz, probably with big shootas and TL rokkits.

The Kanz, in the beginning, will advance with the mek tied to either a grot unit or in a battlewagon with sluggas. They have a fairly short range but should still be a decent anti horde unit and a good counter assault. The grot tanks will lay down heavy suppressing firepower. Everything else will zoom about and dog pile on their units. I have a TON of Str 5 and 6 in the army and lots of units.

So... any thoughts? Help a fella out!
Check out more inside!

I do prime black.. yeah Im horrible on white primer always have been, I did the same with my Vampires. A couple differences this time I went a different way with the bone. On my VC I went for a more classroom skeleton with a bright white being the end product. I used bestial brown (mournfang brown) as a base over the black, then to a bleached bone (ushabti bone) and then a final coat of skull white (white scar) with my tomb kings I wanted a more older dusty look and to accomplish this I did the same Bestial base, but then a bubonic brown (Zamesi desert) and then a final highlight of bleached bone. When I brush the bone I apply all layers pretty generously and not so much of a drybrush, it almost makes layering colors useless to some but the end product does actual vary depending on the colors in the layers used even if you cant see the spectrum of them.

The gold I did have some issues with in deciding which to use. Originally on some of my earlier VCs I used brazen brass until they discontinued it and then started using shining gold (gehennas gold). With the TK I bought a few different ones off the new line Screaming Bell and Hashut Copper. I found the Screaming bell had too much of a red tone to it that it didnt mix well with the pink and blue. But the Hashut by itself being so greatly formulated (Compared to terrible gehennas gold) went on so nicely over the black I didnt even have to highlight it.

Now for the two main colors Im sure what most people care about, the pink and blue. I originally started off with tentacle pink on my VCs about 6 years ago then to find they discontinued it, and I didnt stock up before so. I had a hard time finding a replacement so I put them on hold for a bit, but looking into other lines I found that vallejo made a squid pink which was almost identical to tentacle. So I have been using that. On my VC's I went a liche purple to a warlock purple to the squid pink, with my TKs Ive decided to skip the warlock purple since the blue is my dominant color this time around. As for the blue, same thing I use a vallejo deep sky blue overtop of a caledor blue on my Tks, and on my VC I used Mordian Blue to Enchanted to deep sky. (I think deep sky's equivalent is either ice blue or temple guard blue).

Check out a few of the pics for some show of how the colors all worked out! And stay tuned for more to come, again any questions please feel free to ask
I guess I realised its not my cup of tea, well Ive always known that. But the worst part is I love fantasy and prefer it over 40k, but fantasy is not my strong game and 40k is.. haha anyways I have decided to kick off a new round of fantasy with yet another undead army.. Tomb Kings! I picked up some battalions and figured I wouldnt make the same mistake twice and get all of the core painted and out of the way first rather than having to scramble core units later on down the road when tournaments and events come up. That being said this weekend I assembled 3 chariots and painted up the first one to get my scheme in order... and for the life of me no matter how many color combos I tried it came back to the cotton candy and bubblegum theme just like my Vampires.. here is the first look. So stay tuned for more coming in the future!
Instead of working nine hours a day, walking a dog, being active, etc, etc, I am basically sitting around doing nothing at all.

Other then watching endless Netflix, I have been doing some painting. Amongst the works done... Grots! Here's a quick picture to tide the faithful viewers over.
All I can do it sit these days so hopefully that means even more painting! I did assemble the Skullvane Manse, so maybe that's in the future!
Or at least, I am! I am just a few days out of the hospital from knee surgery.

Come inside for the details.

It doesn't look like much, admittedly, but this is a few days after. I had my knee scoped and in the process had a lateral knee release to move my kneecap into the right place and they cleaned up a TON of scar tissue and damaged cartiliage. To say I've lived a physical life is an understatement. A dozen years of martial arts, nine or ten wrestling all over the place and just general wear and tear of being on your feet for nine or ten hours a day working my nine to fiver.

The surgery itself was okay, but the day itself was one of the most horrible experieces of my life. First of all, it was an hour drive to another town in Canadian winter weather. It was in another town so they could do the surgery while I still could walk. The nurses were inept as can be and nearly killed my putting in an IV of all things.

Attempt 1: Didn't work, started swelling when they missed the vein.

Attempt 2: Tried, didn't find a vein

Attempt 3: A new nurse tried, missed the vein and my hand started SWELLING with saline fluid. I mean, it was visibly getting larger like a balloon. It hurt as bad as anything I've experienced. Definitely a 9 or 10 out of 10 on the pain chart. Just agonizing. Then I started getting nauseous and dizzy as they tried number 4 on the other hand. I told them how bad it hurt... and then woke up a while later. My heart rate crashed into the 30's and my blood pressure was 90/50 or so. My wife was right there too and didn't like it one bit.

Attempt 4: Obviously I passed out and it never happened.

Attempt 5: A new nurse, I assume the head nurse, came in and did it in my arm and easily. Thank god.

I ended up on oxygen and a heart monitor while they kept giving my fluids. I assume I passed out because of the pain. It was that bad. I woke up sweating all over and didn't feel right the rest of the day.

So I went into surgery and was going to get an epidural. They sat me up and the above happened again. Started feeling sick, got dizzy, on the verge of passing out. So they opted for a general and I went under for the surgery.

It actually happened again in the recovery room. I started feeling sick but kept it down and was just groggy as all hell all day, night and the next day.

That was Wednesday. I am able to walk a SMALL but without crutches but it's uncomfortable. I still can't do stairs and it's fairly tiring just trying to be active around the house getting food or letting the dog outside.

So... that's why I haven't posted anything recently. The other guys have no excuse. Well they do... video games... but that doesn't count.

I guess I win the Noveldar challenge at least! =)

So I'm going to need to re-shoot them. In the meantime, I'll at least show you the crappy pics I took of his Tyranids. The Vampires were just a straight up mess. So my apologies to Fear and to The Chaos Kid, who both put in the time on this project. I'm going to try to get my regular camera working so I can take pictures with the tripod instead of my really shaky hands. I'll start with his Trygon:
These Tyranids are now in The Chaos Kid's hands now, much as Fear's Vampires are in my hands. We're a community... we share.

So I'll try to get the camera working so I can take more steady pictures, and probably get my wife to help me with the focus. These pain pills I'm on are kicking my ass.Green Feevah!http://www.blogger.com/profile/18285405322184377641noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536539613012956241.post-89429566691378492302012-11-19T21:50:00.002-08:002012-11-19T21:50:39.422-08:00What's next?

Hey guys!

Seeing as I really haven't really posted any hobby stuff here yet at Hobby At All Costs, I figured I could post a teaser of what I'll be working on next.

I know, I know. Why is this guy posting pictures of grey plastic? I'm just excited about these models. Really, really happy about them actually. And although what I really should be doing is painting up the rest of my Tzeentch warriors, with all these new models that recently came out for Warriors of Chaos, I'll be focusing on the new Skullcrushers among other things.

Read inside for more updates:

Note: Ignore my terrible attempt at making a light friendly backdrop for the models, I probably shouldn't have wasted my time.

While finishing up the 'Crushers will be my top priority, the beautiful new centerpiece of my army will be getting magnetized for all four marks (even though I'll only ever use Tzeentch or no mark, to be honest) and the rider. The Warshrine! This thing is huge. Like really, really big. It dwarfs my Tyranid Trygon, and comes toe to toe with the Mortis Engine. I had no idea how large this model was. The amount of detail on the Warshrine is crazy, and this picture really doesn't do it any justice. For some reason this model recieved a lot of flak when we first saw pictures of it, but in person it's really quite amazing. I'll take it over to Green Feevah!'s place for proper photography when I get some color on it.

Green Feevah! probably hates me for this, but I really love the rules for Valkia and Festus. I have played Festus in a few games and he always performs well, the extra 45 points (on top of a regular Level 2 Nurgle sorcerer) are totally worth it for conferring Poisoned Attacks and Regeneration (5+) to the unit. Stick him in some AHW Khorne Warriors and lol. Valkia, I have yet to play as she is quite expensive. But her rules are different and quite powerful. Str 7 w/KB on the charge and she strips a Strength off of any attack directed at her; really cool. I have a 3000p. List loosely based on the White Dwarf WoC list that I want to try which includes both of these Special Characters. Conveniently Gee Dubs released some AMAZING models for my favorite characters.

Festus is gorgeous. Horrifying and discustingly breathtaking. I have to say that this is the first Finecast model I've not had a single problem with. It was a perfect cast, and a crazy detailed one to boot. I'm super excited to get him painted up. I usually paint Khornate so some pustules and rot might do me some good. Papa Nurgle will be proud.

Valkia is just awesome. She was so good at killing that Khorne brought her back to life when she died JUST so she could kill more. Another super detailed and relatively good Finecast model. I guess I got lucky. Also super excited to paint this one up.

Thanks for checking in, come back and next time maybe I'll have some color on something.. I hope. The Chaos Kidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06687521192318581819noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536539613012956241.post-11308185542424609482012-11-19T00:25:00.001-08:002012-11-19T00:25:11.409-08:00Disaster Strikes!I've been gone for a bit. I know, I know, bad painter! But life sometimes kicks you in the ass.

Like tonight.

I was finally feeling a little more like myself (I'm on a bunch of pain pills for my neck that have made me a little loopy), and I sat down to paint, thinking "I'm really far behind on Noveldar... I need to get something done". And I was making good progress... until Disaster Struck!

Out of nowhere, a hinge on my painting table busted, causing my entire station to flip towards me, spilling my paint water, and an open pot of flesh wash, all over my models and my lap.

Not cool.

So I'm going to spend tomorrow trying to recover my models. Then I'm going to post the pictures me and the Kid took of Fear's models. Then I'm going to declare Noveldar officially over. Then I'm going to show you another project I'm going to work on.

But for now, I'm done painting tonight. It would take the rest of the night just to clean off my paint pots and set up a new painting station on my coffee table.

Ugh...Green Feevah!http://www.blogger.com/profile/18285405322184377641noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536539613012956241.post-82575836570073697752012-11-18T21:52:00.000-08:002012-11-18T21:52:12.499-08:00Reiksguard Done!I HAVE been painting as well!

After getting these done I realized just how much metal is on them. They are also a giant pain in the ass to line up. That's what I get for trying to refurbish old, used models. Still, it's another unit done for my Empire!

And in other news: I am getting knee surgery on Wednesday so will probably not be posting for a couple days. The rest of the slackers better. I get challenged to Noveldar? WHO IS POSTING!? ME! THAT'S WHO! Challenge... won!

Ahem.

Anyhow, I am not sure just how extensive it will be. I know I won't be traversing stairs so will move my painting upstairs to eat up time as I sit around forever and ever. That said, I have stuff to do as I am going to a 1500 point 40k tournament at the end of December, very likely taking my orks. I think I may paint up my grot tanks for it as Forgeworld is allowed.

I am gonna try and get a bit more posted before Wednesday. Let's hope!Wallshammerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14543135205443601567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536539613012956241.post-23498025088207018212012-11-18T12:41:00.002-08:002012-11-18T12:41:48.613-08:00Top 10 Core Units

Here is one that will get people arguing/discussing, let's hope the latter! It's what I think are the top 10 choices in the Core units for Warhammer Fantasy. I am taking into account not just their stat line but upgrades, magical banners and typical builds using them. Come inside and see if you agree.

10. Gor (Beastmen) are a wonderful unit. A lawnmower if you will. They are quite cheap and easy to take in VERY large units. I would say of all the top 10, this is going to be your biggest unit. They CAN take shields, but you never do, instead relying on extra hand weapons, primal fury and the Beast Banner. The Beast Banner BSB is basically a must if you're running a giant horde of these. Strength 4 is nothing to sneeze at. Add in the mandatory Wyssan's Wildform caster (or more) and you have a giant destruction machine. It's not rare to see these fellas at Toughness and Strength 5, winning combats purely on outkilling the other guy.

9. Dwarven Warriors are a very, very versatile unit and in the grand scheme of things a bit underrated. In eighth edition there is no reason for them NOT to have Great Weapons. You have other anvils in the army you can use (like the awesome Hammerers). From there they can be upgraded to Rangers or Longbeards, each with their own different use. Add in high toughness, awesome leadership for a core unit and heavy armour and you're going to really shock people in a fight. Not to mention the potential a lord or hero adds to this unit to take on the really scary stuff.

8. Ghouls (Vampire Counts) are the best core unit in the VC book hands down. Two attacks, T4 and poison go a long way in what's normally a really, really fragile army. Sure, they crumble, but they are only 10 points each and can be revived with Invocation as the battle goes on. And at I3, they aren't actually that slow and go at the same time or before lots of other core units.

7. Savage Orcs... I almost feel bad for putting them this low. Put them in a horde with the Lucky Shrunken Head, extra head weapons and the Big Uns upgrade and you actually might have the single killiest non magic buffed core unit (maybe unit) in the game. Think about it. 3 attacks, 5+ ward, Str 5 on the first round and only 10 points each. Hmmm... maybe they should be higher.

6. Black Ark Corsairs (Dark Elves) aren't necessarily scary when you first look at them. T3, S3... not much to them really. But then you add in the cheap extras. Frenzy Banner, extra hand weapon, cauldron of blood. Right there, 4 attacks each. Nothing to sneeze at. THEN add in the very easy to cast for Dark Elves Okkam's Mindrazor and... well... something's gonna die. ANYTHING is going to die. Add in a Master or Dreadlord for Ld9 and a horde of 30 these is putting out 60, Strength 9 with hatred attacks. Good bye any unit that's ever existed in history.

5. Empire Knights might be too high for some but from personal experience they've always done me so well. The inner circle upgrade makes them downright deadly on the charge. Str 6, 1+ armor charging with WS4 and probably a cheap priest or even a BSB inside. On top of it they are probably the fastest really hard core you are going to get, able to really reach out and touch someone early in the game before support can help the opponent. People might wonder why I am putting these here and not Knights of the Realm and it's simply because of the rest of the army. Artillery and magic is going to soften up the enemy before you get to them. Plus the buffs of Empire are so much better. A Hurricanum giving them +1 to hit, Hatred from a priest, Light magic, etc.

4. Bloodletters (Daemons of Chaos) are... well... scary. You go to a tournament and you'll see a horde of these in every single top table daemon army. Or two. Or three. Sure they're T3. But they have Killing Blow. They're daemons so don't break, WS and S5, very good I, MR1, cause fear. Plus you can buff them up with cheap loremasters and magic standards. Normally they wouldn't be this high. But the fact that they are SO much better then the rest of the core in the book and so feared by everyone puts them really high on my list. AND? Only 12 points. For all that. Wow.

3. Ironguts (Ogre Kingdoms) are fearsome. Simply put. Sure they are double the points of anything else on this list (or more) but what else is Str 6, 3 attacks, 3 wounds, M6, full supporting attacks and heavy armour? What else has easy to cast buffs from Gut or Beasts magic? You have to cause three wounds to reduce their output at all. A horde of these with the Rune Maw become practically immune to magic. You don't debuff these fellas and you aren't doing much to them. They cause fear and can take a magic banner themselves without a BSB. A brutally efficient piece of destruction.

2. Saurus Warriors (Lizardmen) were going to be on this list. Everyone's been looking for them. Cold Blooded ALONE could put them here. High T, S, 2 attacks, 4+ armour with parry for an anvil. TONS of magic. Hard as nails characters. You'll simply never break them and at 11 points each, you're going to have a ton of them in a unit or have many multiples to deal with. Lizardmen also have really cheap screens so you are pretty much always getting the fight you want and if not, you hold them until you get help.

1. Warriors of Chaos. Was there any doubt? WS5, I5. Marks. Awesome armour. Halberds, extra hand weapons or shields. Is there anything they cannot take on? Is there anything they cannot do? Why number one? The rest of the units above are so good because of supplementary help. Warriors can walk around the field without magic help and still smash elite units. Even Swordmasters, the end all be all of lawnmowers, can do little against them. Fifteen points base? I'd take them at 16 or 17 still. SO AWESOME. Every army wishes they had them.

So, let's hear your top 10. Let's hear who is too high and who is too low!
Wallshammerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14543135205443601567noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536539613012956241.post-42424121889502391982012-11-12T22:23:00.002-08:002012-11-12T22:23:32.749-08:00500 Point Madness!

A couple of us guys have been playing these small 500 point fantasy
games, just to try out something different. So far they've been a ton of
fun and they're seriously helping out the way you look at tactics.
Can't always run in there hail Mary when you only have like 2 units on
the board.

Read inside for the good stuff:

The original idea was set up by Green Feevah! and Wallshammer to do a esco-esque paint and play starting at 500 points. Right now a few of us have been getting together to basically play test how we think it would be best to go about it. Nobody really knows what the guidelines are, I suppose that's what we're trying to figure out.

So far, we've worked out that 500 points although similar, play out way differently.

Firstly, fast cavalry are really looking to be MVP's at the moment just because you can't really find a way to deal with them, but you just can't ignore them anymore - those 2 or 3 guys you lose to pistoliers every turn are now a big deal.

Secondly, we thought that we may have to limit the games to d6 power dice for magic, because with a level 2 there is only so much you can do with 10-12 dice.. there's no reason to 6 dice fire balls if you don't have to. Turns out that it didn't end up being that much of an issue, it makes you think more about how many dice you NEED to use to get your spells off, which will help translate into bigger games. You don't want to throw a lot of dice at the spell if you don't have to, you won't have anything to save your ass against a dimensional cascade at 500 points.. not that you would at 5000 points either, but you get what I'm saying. It's not the end of the world if you have a couple dice left at the end of your phase.

Thirdly, certain circumstances might need to be overlooked. For example yesterday Wallshammer and I were attempting to teach my girlfriend how to play Warhammer. She was playing Vampire Counts and him an undisclosed secret army (surprising, I know). He cast Penumbral Pendulum on a unit of her skeletons containing her general, she failed the LoS, general died, and her whole army died from Crumble. In one spell the game was over, and things would have been totally different if that had not happened.. As non-fluffy as it is, Crumble is one of those things we might overlook.

All this aside, I've composed a couple of list ideas for more playtesting. The idea is to try out as many different types of units as possible, so to see which excel and which are wastes of points.

List 1 - MSU

This list is pretty self explanatory. Have the sorcerer in my tough bunker, take him out before they get into combat. Ideally he will double Fireball or end up with Flame Cag, a really powerful spell in 500 points. The marauders, although I have them, provide decent coverage for my flanks and can dish out some damage too, most importantly not panic.

Chaos Sorcerer; Level 1 Fire, Ruby Ring of Ruin, Spell Familiar - 125

11 Warriors; Shields, Mark of Tzeentch, Full Command, Gleaming Pendant - 231

10 Marauders; Flails, Mark of Slaanesh, Musician, Standard Bearer - 72

10 Marauders; Flails, Mark of Slaanesh, Musician, Standard Bearer - 72

Total: 500p.

List 2 - Chosen

The center block of Tzeentchy goodness should be hard enough to kill. Everybody but the Chosen have a 3+/5+, and the Hero can still put out 4 Str 5 attacks at WS7. The Chosen get their Eye of the Gods roll, hopefully giving them something cool. They re-roll 2 and 7 naturally and I have the champ adjusting by 1 either way. With the Tzeentch unit being the anvil that they are, hopefully my Chosen can break the enemy or take out smaller units. My only concern is the small amount of them.

Exalted Hero; Shield, Mark of Tzeentch - 125

11 Warriors; Shields, Mark of Tzeentch, Musician, Standard Bearer, Banner of Eternal Flame- 224

5 Chosen; Additional Hand Weapons, Mark of Khorne, Champion (Favour of the Gods) - 150

Total: 499p.

List 3 - Knights

Pretty much just hoping to god that my knights will be able to pop whatever they touch. I opted for lances because I'm trying new stuff out. I'm not sure how anyone will deal with their 1+/6+ either. Also gave the sorcerer a breath weapon for some extra punch. Could be funny if it works out.

Chaos Sorcerer; Level 1 Tzeentch, Mark of Tzeentch, Stream of Corruption - 125

20 Marauders; Flails; Mark of Slaanesh, Full Command - 130

5 Knights; Shields; Lances, Mark of Tzeentch - 245

Total: 500p.

List 4 - Slaaneshi

This one is weird for me, I really don't like Slaanesh in big games, but it's a cheap mark so it might be really helpful in these small games. I've also never tried Lore of Slaanesh, but it could be interesting. Ecstatic Seizures is really awesome and it only casts on a 12+. As I said earlier, fast cav are great in these tiny games, and the new Slaanesh unit are SUPER fast cav with bonuses for every unit they destroy. Also, they are M10, awesome.

Chaos Sorcerer; Level 2 Slaanesh, Mark of Slaanesh - 125

15 Warriors; Halberds, Mark of Slaanesh, Full Command - 280

5 Hellstriders of Slaanesh; Spears - 95

List 5 - Vampire Counts

I also put together a list for my girlfriend's Vampires, her other list had a Necromancer as the general, but the crumble was so devastating to the army I thought I'd try a more resilient General (who also kicks tail in combat cause he's a freaking vampire hero). Black Knights are also scary as hell.

Vampire; Level 1 Vampire, Heavy Armour, Shield, Dragonhelm. - 121

20 Skeletons; Spears, Full Command - 130

10 Crypt Ghouls - 100

5 Black Knights - Lances, Full Command - 145

Total: 496p.

Sorry about the huge post, and lack of painting stuff, but nonetheless I'd love to hear some opinions on 500 point games if you've played any, or on these lists! Thanks for reading! The Chaos Kidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06687521192318581819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536539613012956241.post-2450253594039779412012-11-12T20:01:00.003-08:002012-11-12T20:01:30.404-08:00TOP 10!: Chaff units

Inspired by Bad Dice Daily, I figured I'd do my own top 10.

Bad Dice Daily is a great little podcast by the way. Short, very informative bits about whatever pops into Ben Curry's mind. Check it out on iTunes!

Now, inside for the list!

Everyone knows I am the chaff master. I love chaff units, redirectors and flankers. Here's my top 10! Hopefully people can use this when creating armies or even just for friendly conversation.

10. Gnoblars: With trappers, these lil fellas become really scary! Perhaps way more then people think, but still, taking dangerous terrain checks on units of expensive infantry is never an enviable task.

9. Razorgor: What's not to like? Movement 7, S and T 5, 3 wounds. They're actually better then a single Ogre and only come in at 55pts. They're amazing assassins too, using them as a bullet to run in and kill a squishy mage.

8. Skinks: Skirmishers with poison weapons. Beautiful. They make great screeners for the rest of the Lizardmen army and are super, super mobile.

7. Spirit Host: Undead chaff! You'd think they'd suck because they can't flee, but you'd be wrong. They have the very large potential of holding up units, allowing flank charges or for you to avoid them completely. Four Wounds and a M6 make them really, really underrated in the vampire list.

6. Single Characters: This is REALLY slept on here. People are too worried about losing a hero or a champ in combat or not having them in combat and making them distract people. Anyone remember my child molesting pegasus knight? Yes, you certainly do. Why? Because he did his job! There are SO many ways to make nearly unkillable characters right now. Lizardmen can do it awesomely, so can dark elves, amongst plenty others. Even Wood Elves have builds that are just great. They might actually do it the best. Bloodcrusher champions also fit into this category as you can take them on their own. Just make sure they are survivable, that's the key. They don't need to kill, they need to redirect and/or hold. That's why you use chaff.

5. Empire Archers: A personal favorite. They have some shooting, are skirmishers so really hard to catch, are cheap and are always ignored since they don't do so much damage. Unless you park them just to make the opponent chase them and not be able to charge your unbuffed state troop unit. You don't need to look impressive to be impressive.

4. Mangler Squig: The deadliest of all chaff. They aren't the usual chaff with redirecting. Instead, you are trying to avoid this bugger because if he catches you, you're in big trouble. Just so, so damaging and game changing even with one on the table.

3. Great Eagle: For me a key with chaff is speed. Who is faster then fliers? The Great Eagle is really tough, really fast. Should be in any army that can take them... and you should take 2!
2. Harpies: Another flying unit. Other then speed and skirmishing, they are so cheap you don't feel bad sacrificing them to a mangler or fanatic.
I wonder, in hindsight, if I shouldn't have done the woods earlier in the process. Basically worked down from brown, adding in some old bronzed flesh for the orange-ish tint. I tied stuff together with washes. I am trying to figure out how to do wood properly. When you look at real lumber it's not really pure brown. There are elements of grey and such always. If you got tips, shoot them our way.
Purple and yellow are SO good together. Just a great contrast. Ostermark is generally quartered so I used the turret as the top half. I was originally going to only do the main chassis, but as always, changed my mind in mid paint.

Easy highlighting here. Add white to the yellow, grey to the purple. I remember reading once how you should add grey to the purple instead of white to avoid looking pink. Seems like it worked.
