Four guys who want to win at painting... AT ALL COSTS!

Grots, grots and more grots!

As I mentioned, being off my feet gives me lots of free time.  Instead of working nine hours a day, walking a dog, being active, etc, etc, I am basically sitting around doing nothing at all.

Other then watching endless Netflix, I have been doing some painting.  Amongst the works done... Grots!  Here's a quick picture to tide the faithful viewers over.

Not the best quality, but it's using my iPhone under crappy lighting on one leg.  So live with it!

Arcane Fulcrum done!

Some quick pictures here of an Arcane Fulcrum I sat around and painted today.  All I can do it sit these days so hopefully that means even more painting!  I did assemble the Skullvane Manse, so maybe that's in the future!

Injury report!

Don't worry fans, we're still here.  Or at least, I am!  I am just a few days out of the hospital from knee surgery.

Come inside for the details.

A Little Longer Wait on Those Pics

I screwed up my camera work when taking pictures of Fear's Vampires and Tyranids.  So I'm going to need to re-shoot them.  In the meantime, I'll at least show you the crappy pics I took of his Tyranids.  The Vampires were just a straight up mess.  So my apologies to Fear and to The Chaos Kid, who both put in the time on this project.  I'm going to try to get my regular camera working so I can take pictures with the tripod instead of my really shaky hands.  I'll start with his Trygon:

What's next?

Hey guys!

Seeing as I really haven't really posted any hobby stuff here yet at Hobby At All Costs, I figured I could post a teaser of what I'll be working on next.

I know, I know. Why is this guy posting pictures of grey plastic? I'm just excited about these models. Really, really happy about them actually. And although what I really should be doing is painting up the rest of my Tzeentch warriors, with all these new models that recently came out for Warriors of Chaos, I'll be focusing on the new Skullcrushers among other things.

Read inside for more updates:

Disaster Strikes!

I've been gone for a bit.  I know, I know, bad painter!  But life sometimes kicks you in the ass.

Like tonight.

I was finally feeling a little more like myself (I'm on a bunch of pain pills for my neck that have made me a little loopy), and I sat down to paint, thinking "I'm really far behind on Noveldar... I need to get something done".  And I was making good progress... until Disaster Struck!

Out of nowhere, a hinge on my painting table busted, causing my entire station to flip towards me, spilling my paint water, and an open pot of flesh wash, all over my models and my lap.

Not cool.

So I'm going to spend tomorrow trying to recover my models.  Then I'm going to post the pictures me and the Kid took of Fear's models.  Then I'm going to declare Noveldar officially over.  Then I'm going to show you another project I'm going to work on.

But for now, I'm done painting tonight.  It would take the rest of the night just to clean off my paint pots and set up a new painting station on my coffee table.

Ugh...

Reiksguard Done!

I HAVE been painting as well!

After getting these done I realized just how much metal is on them.   They are also a giant pain in the ass to line up.  That's what I get for trying to refurbish old, used models.   Still, it's another unit done for my Empire!

Come inside and see more

Top 10 Core Units

Here is one that will get people arguing/discussing, let's hope the latter!   It's what I think are the top 10 choices in the Core units for Warhammer Fantasy.  I am taking into account not just their stat line but upgrades, magical banners and typical builds using them.   Come inside and see if you agree.

500 Point Madness!

A couple of us guys have been playing these small 500 point fantasy games, just to try out something different. So far they've been a ton of fun and they're seriously helping out the way you look at tactics. Can't always run in there hail Mary when you only have like 2 units on the board.

Read inside for the good stuff:

TOP 10!: Chaff units

Inspired by Bad Dice Daily, I figured I'd do my own top 10.

Bad Dice Daily is a great little podcast by the way.  Short, very informative bits about whatever pops into Ben Curry's mind.  Check it out on iTunes!

Now, inside for the list!

"Completed" Steam Tank

Another Empire unit done and painted!   I even took pictures of the progress when I remembered.  I thought it would be fun coming back and looking at the progress.   Come inside and join our journey.

Tyranid Defence Line

Chaos Kid sent me this.  It's VERY cool!

Next up on the painting block

I think next up as I continue to paint Empire stuff is this girl!

Lots of work to be finished on her, plus doing the base.   It will be in the purple and yellow of Ostermark, the province of choice for my army.   It's snowing like mad, so it's a good day to hide and paint.   Add in my soon to be surgically repaired knee starting to really bother me and I have nothing else to do!

Thursday 8 November 2012

"Completed" Demigryphs

WHAMMO!  Done!  Kinda.  Need to do a movement tray for them.  I am also toying with doing something on the fluttering lance banners.  I painted one yellow to denote the Standard Bearer for the unit.  Here's two shots.  Also included the Pepsi Max since it's so OP.   And random brettonian models for no reason.

So what's next on the list?  Not sure, we'll see soon!   I truly believe that unless you are pressed for a tournament or important event, you should paint

a) if you want
b) what you want.

Never feel forced to paint anything.   So, thusly, I will paint what I want next.  I have recieved, in the past week, two entire new fantasy armies, so maybe I will do something from one of them.  Or finish the grots I am working on for my 40k army.  Or maybe my gunmages.  Or... well... again, we'll see!

Third Demigryph Done!

HOORAY!

Three done now.  Next up, their riders!   Pics:

Aegis Defense Line Tactica

Wth a very sick wife taking up most of my attention, my painting is sadly not getting done, and I only have a few minutes to post.  So I figured I'd tackle a no-brainer: the Aegis Defense Line.

More after the break:

Hey, who's the new guy?

Hello, hobbyists and gamers alike!

I'm brand new to Hobby At All Costs, and really, brand new to the whole world of wargaming.. But I'll dig into that in a second. Firstly I'd like to thank Wallshammer for inviting me to do some posting on here. Now here's a little about myself before I do anything else.

HELP ME DECIDE!

CONUNDRUM!

Also, post 200!

I am going to a 1500pt tournament in the States (Kallispell to be exact) on December 29th.  I am going to be at the cabin in Whitefish (which is nearby) for New Years anyhow, so why not right?

Help me decide what to bring!   I am looking to at least make a nice first impression.  I want to do well, but I don't want to bring something everyone is going to hate playing.  Follow me inside for the options:

Second Demigryph done!

Another bird done!  Not bad really.   As I said before, they're really nice kits.  A lot of surface to paint and large bases to work with.  One more to finish and then I do the riders.

And here they are together.  Once I finish the entire unit and movement tray, I'll take it to Green Feevah's light box for better pics.

Ten Reasons Why I Think Rhinos Might Not Be The Best Option Anymore

I've been giving this topic a lot of thought today.  As you know, I have both a Space Marine, and a Space Wolves army.  The Marine list is all foot, while the Space Wolves list is mobile.  And I'm starting to wonder for my Space Wolves if Rhinos are the way to go.

Hear me out, after the break:

To Special Character or Not To, that's the question!

Let's drum up some conversation from our readers and discuss something near and dear to everyone:  Special Characters.

Some of us hate them, some of us can't do without them.   Why is that?  What sways you either way?   Tonight, on Election Night, make your voice count!

(If it's not actually election night when you read this, pretend it is)

Myself... it's a toss up.  I don't like that they are so preposterously common as to not be special anymore.  But, at the same time, I do always espouse having fun over anything in the game.  Some people find these fun.  If they are playing people who don't mind special characters, then is it actually a problem?   After all, no one forces us to play against them.  We choose to, whether we like to or not.

So yay or nay and why?

Noveldar, Day 5

He said let there be progress, and there was progress, and it was good.

Got a lot done today.  How much, you ask?  Two whole squads, that's how much!  Plus I sorted out my next several tasks and laid down some green on the vehicle hulls.

So here is the first squad I finished.  They had quite a bit done on them from Yesterday, but still took a few hours to finish up.

More after the break:

Monday 5 November 2012

One Birdie done!

One is finished.  Obviously I still need to do the rider, but here's the bird-cat thing.

And yes, I do have the messiest painting table ever.

Noveldar, Day 4

Yeah, so much for daily postings, but I haven't been getting work done daily.  But I have gotten work done, so here I am a'postin'!

I started by trying to assembly line paint to catch up on the couple of days I lost, but I got tired of doing it halfway through.  Still it's a decent dent on the last two squads.

Then I went back to the fourth squad, which I'd actually started on Friday.  They are nearly done.  I'm halfway through the last highlight of grey on the blacks, then it's a general clean up on the blacks and a clean up of the whites, then gems and eye lenses and finished!

I'm very confident I'll have the 4th squad finished by tomorrow night, and then I'll probably go back to finishing the base blacks on the last two squads.

I still have 2 Warp Spiders, that second Wraithlord, 3 War Walkers, 4 Jetbikes, 2 Vypers, around 15 Harlequins, 5 Forgeworld Wave Serpents and 3 Night Spinners to go yet, so I'm not out of the woods yet.  But the infantry is largely done.

Demigryph Update!

Just a quick update before I head out for D&D for the evening.  Green Feevah is running a Pathfinder campaign.  Us, our wives and another fella.  We're currently going through the Rise of the Runelords campaign.  If you're into RPG's, I highly suggest Pathfinder.  Such a cool world.

ANYHOW... pictures!

This one is nearing completion.  I have to finish the base and we'll see if the actual gryph itself needs touch ups.   I need to blend the beak a bit more it looks like.   It's a really fun model to paint, I must say.

And proof the other two are in progress!

Saturday 3 November 2012

I've been painting too!

The title says it all.   Little me has been painting, though apparently not nearly as much as Green Feevah has been.   I started these lil fellas last night while watching Firefly...

And that's not all on my list of current WIP!   I happened to pick up something else today for a special project.   What you ask?    Check inside for spoilers!

Thursday 1 November 2012

Noveldar, Day one!

I'm off to a running start!  Okay, I cheated a little bit and have been working on it for the last day and a half, but I wanted to have some stuff to show on the first day.

So, without further ado, the pictures... after the break:
